5 Things I Loved About Community College
(1-minute read)
Hey everyone, a lot of you don’t know I went the community college route to get to where I’m at today and with high school graduations coming up, I wanted to share why I LOVED my experience at community college!
**for those who may not know what community college is, it is a type of undergraduate higher education institution, generally leading to an associate degree (2-year degree), certificate, or diploma (source).
5 Reasons Why I Loved Community College
💸 AFFORDABLE
California is 1 of 31 states that provides free tuition to students who attend community college for the first two years of their education (source). All I really had to worry about for school was a parking pass and textbooks (which I rented or borrowed).
⏰ FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES
Community college typically caters to students who are commuters or have multiple commitments (ie: work, taking care of family, etc) and classes can have a range of 8am to 7pm start times – I was working multiple jobs at the time so I found this flexibility helpful!
🙋♀️ SMALLER CLASSES
With community college it typically means a smaller campus and smaller classes! I prefer smaller classes since I can get to know the instructor, feel more comfortable raising my hand, and get to know my classmates better.
🫶 ACADEMIC SUPPORT
With smaller campuses this also aids in easier access to academic support and I found this REALLY useful as a first-gen student who had NO idea what certain terms meant, what resources were available, etc.
🔏 TRANSFER AGREEMENTS
This is an agreement between two academic institutions stating courses offered at one institution will be accepted for transfer to the other (in my case i took agreed upon classes at my community college to transfer to UC Davis so I could complete a 4-year degree).
This is a short post, but I hope it helps whoever is considering the community college route. It worked really well for me and it works really well for others. Thank you so much for reading and have a good day!
